San Diego lifeguards patrol beaches from nine permanent lifeguard stations (Ocean Beach, South Mission Beach, Mission Beach, North Pacific Beach, Pacific. La Jolla Shores · Ocean Beach · Mission Bay Beaches · Black Beach. San Diegoans are trying to behave and follow passive use restrictions to keep the beach and ocean open. But the car parks are still closed.
So, while San Diego's beaches are open, they're even more difficult to access in large parts of the city. The beaches of San Diego are free to enjoy. State beaches such as Silver Strand in Coronado and Carlsbad State Beach charge fees for parking on the lots. However, you may need to park in a paid public parking lot near any beach during peak season, as free lots and street parking fill up.
A staggering 2.5 million visitors a year make San Onofre one of California's 5 most-visited state parks. Even in places where private homes and businesses dominate the horizon, you'll find public rights of way and easements that allow access to the beach. It remains a significant ceremonial and cultural area that locals, the state, and the San Onofre Park Foundation strive to protect. Gavin Newsom closed Orange County beaches alleging unsafe behavior, prompting concerns that San Diego beaches would close just 48 hours after reopening.
But for large segments of San Diego, beaches were out of reach long before the pandemic and the novel coronavirus is likely to worsen the disparity. It's where the San Luis River meets the ocean, so a sandbank often forms here that creates a break for surfing. Special events such as weddings, large gatherings and competitions require special permits, which are usually obtained months in advance through the appropriate division of local beaches or Parks and Recreation offices. Like other great San Diego beaches, finding a parking spot (on the street or on a lot, free or paid) anywhere near Coronado beach areas can be a challenge.
